Genius bath time fun the kids will love
These easy and frugal bath time hacks will make their nightly bath an adventure for the kids. Go beyond the rubber duckie and explore these alternative bath time toys and games.
Alternative bath toys
Collect empty containers from the kitchen and use as toys in the bath. The kids will love to explore with less traditional bath toys. Talk and experiment with how the containers float, about pouring from container to container and the science behind creating underwater bubbles.
Whilst you’re in the kitchen, grab a colander/sieve, ladle, baster, funnel or some plastic cups. I once gave my son a melon baller and it became his favourite bath time toy for weeks! Kids don’t care if it’s actually a toy.

Grab the food colouring from your baking box. It only takes a couple of drops to colour the bath – and don’t worry, if you go easy, it won’t stain the kids or the bath.
A wonderful idea for a special week, such as their birthday week is having a ‘rainbow bath week’. Colour the bath a different colour every night. Engage the kids and play a game throughout the day where you leave clues about what colour the bath will be tonight. The kids will be ecstatic with anticipation.
Try an orange bath for Halloween or a green bath for St Patrick’s Day, or create your own special family days.
In summer, you can also make coloured ice cubes by adding a few drops of food colouring. When you pop them in the bath, the colours will swirl through the water as the ice cubes melt.
For a crafty session that’s easy to clean up, add some food colouring to shaving cream and let them go wild finger painting the bath.
Balloons in the bath
If your kids like to pop balloons, add a small toy or a message on a popsicle stick and add to the balloon for them to pop in the bath. If they’re too little for the ‘pop’, give them water balloons to bob around in the bath.
Write letters or numbers on the balloons and turn it into an educational session.
Make their birthday extra special, and string balloons up above the bath or fill the tub with balloons. Add streamers to the ceiling too.
Glow in the dark fun
Place a few glow sticks in the bath and turn off the lights. If you want to make it truly magical, add some glow in the dark star stickers to the tiles and a lava lamp (well away from the bath).
